My Beulah 4/5 Switchrod is now my go-to rod for tailwater trout fishing in east TN. I can easily throw double nymph rigs and dries to water I never though of reaching before. It really improves mending so you can get nice drifts in the deep pools where the big browns hold. All this and it has just the right flex to protect 6X tippet. A perfect tailwater rod. My buddy is a bamboo rod fanatic who never fishes "plastic rods" and even he gave it rave reviews. Here's a pic of one of the big browns I landed on the South Holsten River on 6X tippet.

I just got back from 14 days on the water out of Placencia Belize.  I had with me the 10/11 Bluewater matched with a Tibor Billy Pate Tarpon reel.  That rod kicks some serious butt... This was the first saltwater experience for me, and I am glad I at least had one Beulah rod with me.  The first day we got into a school of racing Bonita (running 6-10 lbs), I could not believe how hard running the saltwater fish are.  I casted and blasted and hooked into, and boated three.  My buddies broke a Sage Xi2 10wt and TFO TiXR 10wt in the same school.  They had this look like "What the F just happened?" What the hell rod do you got... I smiled and said a Bad Ass Beulah Bluewater....  On my first Tarpon I was able to tire them and work them in to the boat with confidence.  From Barracuda to Spanish Speaking Mac, that rod was great!!!!  The next day someone else broke a Sage XP 10wt.  I attached a couple of photos.  Your website is right... this is a rod that will go with me to far off places to bring back fish and memories!!!

In a word - amazing! Rigged it up and field tested in yard. Very sensitive and responsive. You can easily feel it load. I was not expecting much in the way of distance and was thrilled with accuracy at 30 - 40 feet trying small dries and w/buggers in size 8. My son, strictly an Orvis guy, came by for breakfast and gave it a whirl. 1st cast, 62' and he does not double haul. He will order one before the day is out! I just found out you don't need to spend $600+ for the latest and greatest. Check out Beulahflyrods.com Anyone is welcome to try or borrow mine.

Hi James,

Enjoyed our chat today, but I don't think I made it clear that it's the best casting 8 wt. I've ever tried--and I did get a chance to cast a Z-Axis and a Scott X2S at the fly show in January. I was throwing a 2/0 Puglisi style mullet fly today too, instead of a little tuft of yarn.

I'll touch base with you later next week about the bag and handle. Thanks.

Joe

Today the 7'6" Beulah Guide Series 3wt went for its maiden voyage. Armed with a Lamson/Waterworks Litespeed 1.5 reel, the destination was the Owyhee River in S.E. Oregon.

First off, the rod. It is snappy, active, and beautiful. The Scientific Anglers Trout series 3wt DT line accompanied it well and I was able to punch casts just about as far as I can on my 9' 5wt. Having an 18" brown trout on the other end was an exciting, enjoyable proposition. The rod performed beautifully and I hardly felt like I was using such a light rod. It was only until I picked up my 5wt at the end of the day that I noticed how effortless and delicately the Beulah rod throws emergers and small dries.

My brother and I caught some fish and had a great time. Size 20 and 22 midge emergers were the main faire, with some streamer fish thrown in for good measure at the end of the day. It was an average fish day - no big ones. Some of the fish are post-spawn and a bit thin, yet aggressive.

Here are a few photos.

Hi James,

I received my 6wt rod this Saturday and put it through its paces on the Puget Sound (I matched it up with a 6 Galvan Torque reel and 6 wt. Rio outbound line).

This rod exceeded all my expectation. It is very fast, it recovers quickly, and it is great to look at.

You've done good James. I have a G. Loomis in a 9'6" GLX Streamdance, also in a 10' IMX, and a 9'6" Loop Greyline in a 6wt. and so far I like how your stick throws more.

I can't wait to see what kind of fighting tool it is on bigger quarry.

Anyways, I thought you might want to know. I'm very pleased with your product and I hope your company flourishes in the coming years.

Keep me informed with any new deals. Take care.

James, I finally got some real pressure on the 10/11 rod this last week. It was my primary rod on an offshore trip in Louisiana for big fish. It handled three 15 pound Bonita right off and then a 400 pound shark took the next fish I had on. I stupidly had 30 pound tippet on and the damn fish ran away under the boat making the break off, without touching the rod to the boat, pretty interesting. It took almost all I had plus about 300 yards of backing to get enough pressure to break the line at the angle I had to have to save the rod. In the same situation a Loomis 12 wt. GLX gave up and shattered. I am still working on some big tarpon this season. The combination of ease of casting and ability to take the pressure this rod has makes me confident in fighting the big fish. I cannot wait to work with the eight wt.. I suspect I can replace my heavy nine and light ten wt. rods with it.

Hello.
Don't worry, this is a positive email :-) About two weeks ago I ordered a 7/8 weight switch rod, and a matching line from you. You stated, "we don't have any production ones yet, but we'll custom wrap one and send it to you. It should be done by Friday and you'll have it the next week". Right before you guys are going to a show? RIGHT! Imagine my surprise when the rod arrives dead-bang on the day you predicted!

I had the opportunity to fish the rod this Saturday on some Puget Sound beaches for Sea Run Cutts and Silver Salmon. All I can say is WOW! I still haven't received the matching line so I matched the rod with an 8wt Rio Outbound (claims to be 330 grains). Right off the bat I couldn't get a two hand stroke to come off, so I started single handed. The rod pitched the Rio line with such ease and deceptive power that I was throwing size 2 foam headed sliders 80 feet with incredible turnover. I was only limited to 80 feet because of running line issues, on a warmer day (it was 40 degrees) 80 feet would not have been the limit.

At first I thought the rod was underlined for two handed work, but after about an hour and a half, I found the two handed stroke and the fun really began. It was an 18 foot tide and there literally was no beach. The water ran right up to the trees and a cliff face. I was doing scandanavian style underhand casts and getting it out there 60 to 70 feet with a line not even suited to the technique, and had access to a good 300 yds of water that couldn't have been fished any other way. As the tide dropped and I hit more open beaches, two handed overhead casting came into play. I still need to figure out how to keep the backcast up consistently, but the deliveries were unbelievable. I hate to overstate things, but this rod changes everything. The most suprising aspect of the rod was that despite its power, it let 12 to 14 inch fish put on a show. The biggest problem with gear selection on Puget Sound is that you are chasing 6 to 10 pound salmon, but you are mostly catching 10 to 16 inch cutts.

Fit and finish is incredible. A truly gorgeous rod that doesn't copy anything on the market right now in blank color and thread wraps. Oversize guides and tiptop... Nothing is missing. I love the Meiser inspired cork/composite grip as well. I'm going to have to pick up an 8/9 or a 9/10 before my next trip to Baja for beach work.

James:
After a brief casting session under a very windy and chilly condition, I have the the following observation: It is more powerful than the T3 and power comes in a nice progressive manner. Much like that of the IMX. In addition there are plenty of reserved power. In fact I did load the rod with a WF6 and tip-snapped into a 30MPH head wind without much a problem. This is truly a forgiving stick with a lot of on-demand power. Sign of a great rod! For your info I have acquired 5 different brands of new generation 5 WTs in the last four months and Beulah is the best of them all. Best regards, G.L.

James,

Just an email to consummate our telecon of this evening. I received the Guide 7 wt rod this evening and what a beautiful piece of work, Emerald green blank, color matched titanium Guides and reel seat, rubberized cork at the wear points. I immediately set it up with the River Extra Fly line that I orderedand tied on a 6 ft leader and one of the fluffy streamers that we fish with. I spooled off 50' of line and started to cast (in my back yard)... 70' to 75 feet with 2 false casts. After our conversation about sinking tips, I tied on a 12' piece of sinking tip and went to the pond (about 7 acres) and boy was it was chilly here in Kentucky (38 deg).. To make a long story short, I ended up with about 85' to 90' line out with three or so turns of fly line left on the spool... Exactly like you said it would... I can't wait till Monday or Tuesday to take it to the River and see what it will really do (With a big Brown on)... Thanks so much for the great rod and line, I hope to follow with some nice pics as the season goes on ( I guess that sweetwater pics are o.k.)... I hope a big Striper doesn't hit one of the Trout Streamers... Yeah right... but I have no doubt about the rod handling the situation... Please keep up the good work... Thanks so much

This afternoon it was pretty warm here in Edmonton so I took out your 6wt and three of my stiff rods plus the Sage XP. I load the rods with 5wt line to reduce the load to see which one has the best tracking. I am pleased to tell you that 6wt Guide beats out Fenwick CoFi, Fenwick Techna AV, Echo distance competition and the Sage XP altogether. These are all rockets, and yours a missile. Well done.

I received a personalized 7/8 Switch Rod as a gift from Dudley Campbell (managing partner of Spinnerfall Guide Service) one week ago. I can't put the damn rod down. Never in my wildest dreams did I think there was a rod out there that would allow me to pick 70 feet of line off the water and with no false cast shoot the 70 feet, plus more, back out on target.

I'm a retired 66 year old fly fishing 'nut' (approx. 200 days a year) who has arthritis and a partial torn rotator cuff. 'Beulah' allows me to avoid the pain I've experienced every day of my fishing life. Example: Two days ago I 'hucked' big streamers and poppers for smallmouth 6 hours straight with very little of the usual pain I experience while casting and at day end.

I own over 30 fly rod's from bamboo to Sage TCR's. None of them perform like my 'Beulah'. This AM I ordered your 9/10 Switch Rod for steelhead and King Salmon. I hate like heck to buy any more rod's but the lovely 'Beulah' has a gun to my head.

I'm well known on the rivers of western Michigan and would be happy to openly endorse (something I've never done before) your Switch Rod's.

May The 'Tip' Of All Beulah's Be Forever Bent.

Sincerely,
Steve Ladd
